When we left Jonah at the end of chapter 3, all was good. Jonah had obeyed God and Nineveh had repented. So why is there a chapter 4? Was there something else to be learned? What does it look like to finish well? What does it look like to finish a mission well? What kind of a heart does it take to finish a mission well? We are called to run with God on the mission but we must run to the finish.
Do you believe in second chances? Do you believe in do overs? Who qualifies? What if you have already used up your second chance? Jonah was called to go on a mission with God to reach people who were in need of a second chance. To accomplish this mission, Jonah received a second chance himself. Would Jonah finally embrace the mission of second chances? Do you and I?
When you think of a retreat most people think of rest and relaxation. Retreats can serve other purposes in our life as well. Has God ever sent you on a spiritual retreat? Has He set aside some special time for you and for Him so you can get back to the most important things in life? What circumstances is God creating in your life that He might be using to get your attention and grab your heart? Jonah spent a 3 day and 3 night retreat in the belly of a fish? What was the result? Did God get Jonah’s attention? Is the account of Jonah and the whale a fable or an historical account?
What would it look like for you to have God’s heart of mercy? What would it look like for you to love your city the way God loves your city? To love your neighbors like God loves your neighbors? What would it mean for you and I to follow God wherever He said to go? Are you running? Are you running away from God or toward Him? Is your heart God’s heart? What proof is there? Jonah faced all of these questions and ended up running, not toward God, but away from God. Jonah’s life teaches us how we need to run in the right direction if we are going to have a heart that is aligned with God.
What does it mean to get ready for Christmas? Is Christmas for you one hour of your time on a Sunday at church for some songs and a short reading from the Bible and the rest of the time you’re getting ready for the next big sale? What would it look like if you didn’t just read the story of Christmas but you entered the story? What would it mean if you spent less, gave more, and worshipped Jesus more fully this Christmas? The Advent Conspiracy is where Christians come together to conspire and restore the true meaning of Christmas—Worship.
